🎙️ A Radio Journey: From Listener to Intern…………………Back to Listener
My connection with the show began around the time of the Obama presidential campaign, when I first tuned in and heard the unforgettable segment where Bob suggested “Rooster” by Alice in Chains as Obama’s walk-out song. The resulting laughter and good-natured teasing about the song’s long lead-in always stuck with me.
Although I grew up listening to talk radio, including Howard Stern when he was broadcast in Austin, I truly found “the guys” once I started driving on my own. My curiosity about the show intensified when they began discussing their delay system and production equipment, sparking a desire to see the studio firsthand.
This curiosity led me to an opportunity when Angela Davis, the producer at the time, was looking for interns. I emailed her, creatively stretching the truth about my school enrollment (I was working in apartment maintenance), and soon after, I began interning around 2008 or 2009, shortly after Matt joined the show. It was during this time that the guys gave me the enduring nickname “Booger” because they thought I resembled the character from Revenge of the Nerds.
After my first internship wrapped up, I formally enrolled in a music recording school about a year later. I reached out to the new producer, Daniel Gallo, and started interning again, with a music teacher filling out the necessary paperwork for school credit.
My time as an intern provided incredible experiences, including meeting numerous notable guests like Richard Garriot, Norm Macdonald, Jonah Hill, Alice Eve, and Krysten Ritter. I even got to contribute to some on-air audio bits that Dale requested, such as the memorable “Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner” segment where I approached a woman at an HEB off Hancock to tell her she was the most attractive lady in the store. We all had a great time with those moments.
