This Show

Part 1: FIGHT DAY

This is part 1 of the November 25, 2016 show (Black Friday). The opening finds Bob Fonseca in an unusually dejected mood, feeling unprepared and wanting to go home. The hosts try to lift his spirits with music and banter, but Bob remains frustrated with the show prep. The energy eventually picks up as callers phone in to cheer Bob. The segment includes comedic tension between the hosts, a police pursuit debate with an irate caller named April, a revisit of Shane Moss’s contentious appearance on Doug Benson’s podcast months earlier, and a heated on-air argument between Dale and Bob that spirals from a football discussion into personal grievances. The title ‘FIGHT DAY’ is apt – confrontation and argument dominate this part.

Segments

  • Bob’s Breakdown [00:00:00] — Bob starts the show dejected and exhausted, saying he wants to go home. The crew tries to cheer him up with music (‘Under Pressure’ by Queen and David Bowie) and cowbell.
  • Callers Rally Around Bob [00:04:34] — Female callers Christy and Erin phone in to tell Bob he’s awesome and doesn’t need show prep sheets, just his personality. Bob remains skeptical but the encouragement helps slightly.
  • Shane Moss Arrives / Doug Benson Podcast Retrospective [00:08:43] — Comedian Shane Moss enters the studio. Dale sets up a discussion about the Doug Benson ‘I Love Movies’ podcast taping months ago at Cap City Comedy Club, where Bob felt disrespected by Shane and declared him ‘dead to the show.’ They play clips from that night.
  • Reliving the Doug Benson Show [00:14:00] — The hosts play audio clips from the Doug Benson podcast. Bob was seated away from Doug, felt out of his depth on movie trivia, asked ‘Who is Edgar Wright?’ and got booed. Shane made jokes at Bob’s expense. Bob got increasingly defensive and eventually declared Shane dead to the show the next day.
  • Shane’s Breakup Story [00:21:27] — Shane explains he was going through a painful breakup during the Doug Benson taping – he’d left his Austin girlfriend (who listens to the show) for a supermodel comedian he met on the Bob and Tom tour. Dale and Bob are surprised to learn Shane is still with the new girlfriend nearly a year later.
  • Police Pursuit Debate with April [00:26:52] — Caller April unleashes a furious tirade against Austin Police Department pursuit policies after a recent chase resulted in a death. She argues cops should use surveillance and ‘gumshoe work’ instead of high-speed chases. The debate becomes increasingly heated.
  • April Loses It [00:30:42] — April’s anger escalates dramatically. She accuses the hosts of not being nice, demands answers about APD killings, insults the show (‘this is why your show is never going anywhere’), and the conversation devolves into shouting and multiple F-bombs before she hangs up.
  • Dale and Bob Fight [00:35:03] — Dale tries to talk about the Cowboys game from the night before. Bob gives minimal feedback, leading Dale to become frustrated. The tension builds over Bob’s lack of engagement, Dale’s desire to discuss football, and perceived slights, eventually erupting into a genuine on-air argument about their working relationship, Bob’s neighbors, and Dale’s frustration with doing the show.

Guests

  • Shane Moss (comedian) [00:08:43] — In-studio to discuss and reconcile after the Doug Benson podcast incident months earlier where Bob declared him ‘dead to the show.’ Also discussed his relationship drama and sobriety.

Callers

  • Christy [00:04:34] — Called to cheer up Bob, telling him he’s awesome and doesn’t need show prep sheets Her encouragement slightly lifted Bob’s spirits, though he remained frustrated
  • Erin [00:06:13] — Also called to support Bob, said she’s listened for 13 years and wouldn’t change the station Added to the morale boost for Bob, engaged in playful banter with the hosts
  • Sandra [00:08:11] — Called to say Matt cheered her up on her drive to work Brief positive call that lightened the mood
  • April [00:26:52] — Police pursuit policies and APD killing people during chases Devolved into an explosive confrontation where April became enraged, insulted the show, demanded answers the hosts couldn’t provide, cursed repeatedly, and either hung up or was disconnected after calling them stupid

Music

  • Queen & David Bowie — ‘Under Pressure’ played to try to lift Bob’s spirits; the hosts discussed how Freddie Mercury and David Bowie wrote ‘one of the greatest songs of all time’

Quotes

Part 2: FIGHT DAY

This part is dominated by on-air conflict. The show opens mid-argument between Dale and Matt over Facebook posts and show prep, escalating into a heated fight. Program Director Tom Slick enters to address the ‘Shut the F Up’ music segment, asking them to play more recognizable rock songs instead of obscure artists and Barry Manilow. This sparks another argument about creativity versus programming. The tension peaks when listener Mary calls in to criticize Daniel, leading to an epic, profanity-laced shouting match between Daniel and the caller that lasts nearly 30 minutes. The segment title ‘FIGHT DAY’ proves accurate.
